It's Chicago... it's cold 5 months of the year, and there's millions of people packed together. Perhaps they had previously had the convertible top cut / slashed / used-as-a-means-of-burglarized-entry previously? Who knows, that might be a hard-top with internal latches for "quick release" that are not obvious from the outside ;-)

it occurred to me that it may have replaced something already missing/damaged.
but it looked pretty trashy in person.
